As an artist, it can be challenging to make a living from your craft. However, with the right strategy and approach, it is possible to make a sustainable income as an artist. In this post, we will explore some practical steps that you can take to promote your art online, network with other artists and buyers, sell your work on different platforms, and diversify your income streams.
We will also discuss some important considerations such as pricing your work, understanding the legal and financial aspects of the art world and staying persistent and open to new opportunities.
Promote your art online:
- Make a website or portfolio to show your art
- Make social media accounts (e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) to show your art and meet potential buyers
- Regularly post new art and information about upcoming events
- Consider creating a shop on Facebook and Instagram, these platforms allow you to create a shop and sell your art directly to customers through the platform. This is what my Facebook shop looks like (click the picture):
- Make use of Instagram and Facebook stories and other features to engage with your audience.
This way you can have multiple channels to sell your art and reach more potential customers.
Meet other artists and buyers by going to art shows and events:
- Find art shows and events near you
- Apply to participate in art shows and exhibitions
- Go to art-related events such as gallery openings and art fairs
- Talk to other artists, galleries and art buyers
Sell your art on different platforms:
- Find online marketplaces (e.g. Etsy) to sell your art
- Approach local galleries and apply to show your art
- Make an online shop on your website to sell your art. Mine looks like this (click on the picture):
Make money in other ways:
- Teach art classes
- Make custom art for clients. I love making one-of-a-kind artwork for people. For some inspiration, here’s what my commission page looks like on my website (click on the picture):
- Do freelance work in a related field such as graphic design or illustration
Keep trying and don’t give up:
- Keep making new art
- Keep applying to shows and exhibitions
- Learn from rejection and use it to improve your art
Learn about the business side of art:
- Research how to price your art
- Learn about taxes and legal aspects of the art world
- Ask for help from a lawyer or accountant if needed
Keep creating and experimenting:
- Set aside time every day to make new art
- Try different styles and techniques
- Be open to new ideas and inspiration
Be open to new opportunities:
- Keep an open mind about new opportunities and collaborations
- Follow up on any leads or connections you make
- Take advantage of opportunities that come your way
